Isopropenylmagnesium Bromide (CAS {{0}}) Also known as bromo(prop-1-en-2-yl)magnesium, this organomagnesium compound has a molecular formula of C₃H₅BrMg and a molecular weight of 145.28 g/mol. Belonging to the alkenyl Grignard reagent class, it is typically supplied as a 0.5 M or 1.0 M solution in tetrahydrofuran (THF) or 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MeTHF).
Isopropenylmagnesium Bromide appears as a white-to-orange crystalline powder in its pure form, while solutions range from orange to dark gray. It has a density of 0.927–0.935 g/mL (25 degree , THF solution), a boiling point of 67 degree (azeotropic with THF), and a flash point of 2 degree , making it highly flammable. The compound is soluble in aprotic solvents like THF and diethyl ether but reacts violently with water or alcohols, releasing flammable propene gas.

Metal-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling: Undergoes palladium- or nickel-catalyzed coupling with alkyl/aryl halides to introduce isopropenyl groups in synthesizing drug intermediates or complex olefins.
Regioselective Ring Opening: Used in asymmetric synthesis, such as the total synthesis of natural products like (+)-desepoxyasperdiol.

 

 

Hazards: Highly flammable (H225), reacts violently with water (H260), may cause skin burns (H314) and respiratory irritation (H335).
